The Rate Per Man, Per Hour
Since estimated grand totals are normally non-binding, the estimated grand total is not a good way to select a mover. A more significant number is the rate per man, per hour. Ours is $38 per hour, off peak (Monday through Thursday, and not the last week of the month), or $40 per hour, during peak (Friday through Saturday, or the last week of the month) for 3 or more men. A businessperson that knows labor understands that the above rate is competitive when one considers that it includes equipment (i.e., the truck, blankets, and dollies), and responsibility for the condition of the furniture.
Level of Guarantee
Does the company that you’re considering assume responsibility for the safe arrival of your furniture to your new destination, or does the company limit its liability to $.60 per pound? If a company limits its liability to $.60 per pound, and damages a dining room table weighing 80 pounds, the company will pay you only $48, unless you have purchased extra protection from them for a fee.
We guarantee our work to fair market value at no extra charge (not $.60 per pound). We do expect you to check over each piece as it is being placed, rather than doing something else. Claims of damage are to be written by you on the work-order, and shown to the lead mover before the movers leave. (Other options are available.)
Insurance
We have workers’ compensation, and our provider is Accident Fund Insurance Company of America.
We also have general liability insurance. Ours is through Penn Star Insurance Company. This type of insurance excludes property in the care or custody of the movers. It does provide protection against various unforeseen events (i.e., a family member is injured by stepping in front of a mover carrying furniture, although we have never had that happen).
Better Business Bureau
It’s a good idea to compare the track records of the moving companies that you’re considering by contacting the Better Business Bureau at 314-645-3300, or online by searching http://www.bbb.org.
